Space is silent for the same reason it's dark! It's silent because it does not have an atmosphere. Now, why is having an atmosphere important for hearing sounds in space? Sound travels in multiple media and can not travel and reach an object if there isn't a medium for it to travel. In simpler words sound needs a vehicle like an atmosphere to travel and if the vehicle isn't there then sound can not reach its destination.
There is another reason too. Sound travels as waves like light and heat but unlike them, sound travels by making molecules vibrate. So, there has to be something with molecules for sound to travel through for sound to travel. On Earth, sound travels to your ears by vibrating air molecules. In outer space, the large empty areas between stars and planets, there are no molecules to vibrate. Therefore there is no sound in space.
So the next time you see a movie in which a person is screaming in space you will know why the other person is not able to hear them!
