This is a question not many people ask! But yeah like all things have a reason to exist, laughing has its own sets of reasons to exist. Currently, 3 theories can explain why we laugh.
The first theory is the Relief Theory, let's call it RT for now. RT states that laughing releases tension, pressure, and other kinds of negative emotions by allowing us to face our fears, releasing nervous energy, and overcoming inhibition. In short, RT suggests that we laugh to relax.
The second theory is the Incongruity Theory, let's call it IT for now. IT states that we laugh when our perception of things suddenly changes or when someone does something unexpected (in a pleasing way). In simple terms, IT suggests that you laugh when you are surprised.
The third theory is the Superiority Theory, let's call it ST for now. ST states that we laugh at the misfortunes and shortcomings of others because it makes us feel better about ourselves. Simply speaking we laugh when we feel superior.
These are just a few theories! But at this point in time, no one really knows why we laugh, these theories can be a part of the answer but not the answer itself.
