Why do we dream? This is a question we have all had after either having a nightmare or a dream so good that we regretted getting up after it. But why do we get these crazy dreams anyways? Well there’s no solid answer to it yet but some researchers believe that there’s no real purpose of dreaming whereas others believe that dreams may have a learning purpose or just hold importance in our mental and physical well-being in general.
There are 3 theories to as to why we dream that can answer our question. The first one is the Evolutionary theory that suggests that the purpose of dreams is to learn in a safe environment, for example: learning how to deal with challenging and/or threatening situations. The second one is the Memory Consolidation theory that suggests that dreams are a byproduct of reorganizing memory in response to whatever we have learnt throughout the day.
We all have noticed that when we are stressed or scared, we tend to remember our dreams better thereby leading to an illusion that we dream more, but have y’all wondered why this is the case? This happens because we subconsciously use dreaming as coping mechanism to challenging circumstances, this is also referred to as the mood regulatory function of dream theory. This wraps up the why we dream segment, but we will soon be covering types of dreams, what dreams mean and a lot more exciting stuff to understand dreams better
