What If Trains Were as Fast as Planes?

Writer: Abhimanyu Kumar SharmaAbhimanyu Kumar Sharma

Imagine going from Mumbai to Ahmedabad and Ahmedabad to Mumbai in just 2 hours, while ditching hassles at the airport and traffic jams? This dream isn’t far-fetched anymore, we are on the fast track to revolutionizing our railways and bringing train speeds closer to those of airplanes.

India's ambitious leap into high-speed rail begins with the Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor, which is the country's first bullet train project. Powered by Japan’s Shinkansen technology, these trains have the potential to reach 320 km/h (200 mph), slashing travel time between the two cities from 6-7 hours to just 2 hours. Spanning 508 km with 12 stations, the project costs ₹1.08 lakh crore ($15 billion), with Japan funding 81% through a soft loan. These trains are equipped with earthquake-resistant tech and automatic control systems, the bullet train promises safety, comfort, and energy efficiency.

Beyond traditional rail, we are exploring Hyperloop technology, which is a futuristic transport system where passenger pods travel through near-vacuum tubes at speeds exceeding 1,000 km/h (620 mph)—faster than commercial flights. This revolutionary concept promises ultra-fast, energy-efficient, and low-emission travel, potentially reducing travel time between cities like Delhi and Mumbai to under an hour. A significant milestone in this journey is the completion of a 422-meter test track at IIT Madras, developed by the Avishkar Hyperloop team. This marks our first major step toward realizing Hyperloop travel, attracting global attention and industry partnerships. If successfully implemented, Hyperloop could reshape India’s transportation landscape, offering an alternative to both air and rail travel while significantly reducing congestion and emissions.

The impact of these high-speed initiatives is profound, reduced travel times, economic growth and environmental benefits though there are numerous advantages, there are a few challenges ahead for us like the demand for substantial investments and meticulous planning. However, with continued commitment and innovation, we are poised to transform its transportation landscape, bringing the dream of plane-speed trains closer to reality.

Would you choose a high-speed train over a flight for your next journey? Share your thoughts!
