South Korea!! (part 1)

Updated: Nov 5, 2022

This blog is going to mark the beginning of the series, "The Science of Countries". Let's start with the land of BTS and Gangnam Style, that is South Korea!

A bit about the country, South Korea also known as the Republic of Korea was liberated from American rule on 15th August 1948. It is a country roughly the size of the UK located in East Asia, the national language is Korean and the national currency is Korean won. A fact, most of the Korean population lives in Seoul.

Now coming to the interesting part, here are a few weird or let's say funny things about South Korea.

  • A child is considered one year old as soon he/she is born. The child is considered to be a year older on the day of a new year. So, if a child was born on the 31st of December he/she would be considered 2 years old on the very next day.

  • Crime recreation. This is as scary as it sounds. Here the accused is asked to reenact the crime he/she had committed publicly, which means the public and the media see the crime happen again. Since the media is present, the crime is also sometimes recorded.

  • Tetraphobia. It is the fear of the number 4. Just like how westerners fear the number 13 and try to escape it, East Asians fear the number 4. There is an interesting reason behind this fear. This number is feared because 4 in Korean sounds similar to the word death.

  • Plastic surgeries are more common here than you think. Almost a fifth of south Korean women claims to have undergone at least one cosmetic procedure in their life.

  • Men putting makeup isn't taboo here. Almost 50% of south Korean apply makeup on a daily basis. This makes up around 20% of the men's cosmetic industry.
