It is probably an earworm. It is not an actual parasite that has gone into your ear, but it is the melody that is most likely repeating in your head. It is just a part of the song that’s stuck in your head.
A scientist found that earworms can be triggered by the memories of a song, such as seeing a word that reminds one of the songs, hearing a few notes from the song, or feeling an emotion, one associates with the song. It’s completely involuntary.
About 99% have at least one earworm per week, and about 30% have it multiple times daily.
These can be irritating especially if you have to focus on a task.
Here are a few ways to get rid of them, temporarily of course.
Listen to the song entirely. This finishes the song, and the human brain loves completed tasks.
Listen to a cure tune. These cure tunes suppress the earworm without becoming one themselves. But on a few occasions in an experiment, these tunes did become earworms but were subtle. These tunes may include Happy Birthday and the National Anthem of the UK.
Distracting yourself with something that doesn’t involve music. Our brain is incapable of paying attention to more than one thing at a time. This limitation can be helpful when it comes to earworms.
